Why We Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions

Vic and I have officially refused to make any New Year’s resolutions! A bit harsh right? But it’s the truth! Resolutions are simply empty promises we make to ourselves in order to try to feel better about our lives. Let’s be honest! How many resolutions have we made on January 1st and by the 2nd we’ve already broken them? How many times have we said #newyearnewme? Way too many friends, way. too. many. I’m sure somewhere out there, there is  a graveyard full of all of our resolutions, yet to be fulfilled. But trust me, you are not alone! Millions of people just like us, make empty and pointless resolutions wishing and hoping that they will somehow magically come to pass. And we were in those shoes just last year! We made all these empty promises to ourselves and not even a quarter of them came to pass in 2015! And guess what friends, that’s our fault!

What’s the solution you may ask? Well, for us it consists of one magic word: GOALS! Yep, that’s right. This year we are doing things a little differently. We sat down the week before the new year and wrote down our goals. The goals for our business and our personal goals. And we made… wait for it… a PLAN OF ACTION! We went ahead and wrote down the things we want to accomplish this year and HOW we are going to accomplish those things! I know we are only on the 5th day of the year, but I promise there is something different about setting goals and figuring out how you’re going to make them happen! There’s a fire and a drive, because not only did we set realistic goals, but we also wrote a few things we need to do to reach those goals (which is actually the most important part!)

One of the most important parts of setting these goals, other than the plan of action to go along with it, is setting realistic goals! Set goals that you know for a fact you can accomplish and then add a bit more to push yourself along the way. For example, I set a goal to work out 4 times a week. I could work out only 3 times a week and be fine, but I pushed myself for that one extra day. My plan of action for said goal, is to workout as soon as I got home from my full time job. No waiting until I sat down, relax for a bit and watch TV, no answering emails first, or scheduling appointments right after work. Nope, just getting home, eating a snack and hitting the gym (in my garage, but it’s a gym nonetheless!) You get the picture? It’s a silly example but I’m a teacher so I have to give examples for everything :)

So if you haven’t done so already this year, take some time to set some realistic goals and once you’ve established those goals, make a plan of action to go with it! You’ll see how much more excited you will be about accomplishing the things you want to and actually making them happen!

Cheers to an amazing new year and making those goals happen! We wish you nothing but the best in 2016!
