House Update, Labor Day Weekend, and Hurricane Irma

It has been a little quiet around here and for that, I am truly sorry. To say this month has been crazy is an absolute understatement and we are just glad that things are finally settling down and returning to normal. Since the beginning of this month, we’ve had a few things going on. Our house is getting closer and closer to being completed and we are able to visit our home site at least twice a week to see the progress! This has been such an exciting time and we are just grateful to God that we have the opportunity to build a home together. We also had my family come up for Labor Day weekend and spent some time with them. We showed them the updates on our house and we were even able to have my brother capture some shots of the house with a drone!

Apparently one of the workers agreed with the Bible verses written on the posts of our home :) Thanks to my brother’s girlfriend, Valentina, for these awesome pics of us and the family as we toured the house! Unfortunately, this month also brought a terrible storm from the Atlantic, that I’m sure by now you know was Hurricane Irma. As we’ve kept an eye on this storm, it’s been one of the worst emotional roller coasters for us. If you were keeping up with it, you know that the forecast for this storm constantly changed and the uncertainty that came with it caused most Floridians to go into a panic.

I’ll try to keep this post brief as to not bore you with too many details. Initially, this storm was coming into the east coast of Florida as a Category 5 hurricane, with the eye heading straight for Miami as a direct hit. While we don’t live in Miami anymore, both of our families do, so just imagine our fear as the media started to project this mass destruction for the city I was born and raised in. Not only that, this storm was supposed to head straight up the east coast and slam into us after supposedly demolishing Miami. The real panic set in when our apartment complex told us we couldn’t put anything on the windows to protect ourselves and that the insurance would cover all the damages inside the apartment and they would cover the damages outside. We knew we couldn’t stay here and, for the first time in our lives, we had to evacuate our home as a storm quickly approached.

Thankfully, we had so many of our amazing friends who live outside the state like Luke and Ashley, Ryan and Alyssa, and Eric and Jamie offer their homes for us to avoid the storm. For that, we will be forever grateful. Ultimately, we decided to stay in the state (because the traffic and madness heading north was insane) and we settled on staying in Orlando with our friends Meri and Martin. They allowed us to invade their home for 5 days, even though they have a 4 week old to take care of. Thankfully, we did not end up with a direct hit from Hurricane Irma, but unfortunately, it made a turn for the west coast of Florida at the last minute with a direct landfall in The Keys and the Marco Island/Naples area. We rode out the storm in Orlando and cannot thank our friends enough for hosting us during this crazy time.

One of the perks of being in Orlando, besides spending time with our friends Meri & Martin, was meeting Jennifer and her husband Brett. They are the sweetest people and we loved meeting them (even if it wasn’t under the best circumstances) and getting to know them a little better :)

When we came back to Port St. Lucie we were prepared for the worst and here’s why. The media is a great source for information, but they are also the worst when it comes to actual facts. Yes, this hurricane caused devastation and affected people’s homes but the way they portrayed it was as if the entire state was completely destroyed. They would stand in front of the only house with a tree down and would say the entire city was in that condition. Because of that, we expected to come home to severe flooding, no power, and possibly our new home in shambles. Thankfully, we came home to an apartment that was perfectly in tact and with power, and the home we are building was exactly as we had left it! God is so good and we prayed so much for our families, this state, and ourselves and thankfully everyone we know is safe and sound with minimal damage to their homes!

So I’ve completely failed at keeping this post brief because there was just too much that happened over the past 2 weeks. It’s crazy how natural disasters remind us what’s truly important in life and what really matters. it’s not about the material things but the people we love and their safety. We are grateful to be here and to be safe and sound after this crazy storm. For all those that prayed for us, we are so thankful you did and the love and concern for our well-being that we’ve felt over the past few days has been overwhelming. All we can say is THANK YOU!
