One of our business goals for this year is to read one business book every 2 months. And for the first time ever, I did! Now I know it isn’t a huge deal or a very significant goal to most, but to me it’s big! I like reading (don’t love it just yet) but I really don’t do enough of it. All the photographers we admire, and business people we look up to, have something in common: they read! Last year I read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnage and loved it! I wrote a book review on it because it was so great.  I took the recommendation of one of our favorite photographers and picked up another must-read book called Tribes by Seth Godin. I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot from this book!

One of the great things about it was that whether you own a small business, work a 9-5 day job, or just have a cause that you believe in, this book is a great read! Godin goes in depth on why you should lead others and have a “tribe”. When he refers to a tribe, he speaks about a group of people united for the same purpose or cause and believe in it enough that they create a buzz about it. This relates so much to having a business because we all want those faithful “tribe” members that will be our advocates and tell everyone about us! He goes on to say that everyone should take some sort of leadership role, whether it be at your job or in your local community, and be that leader instead of just following the crowd.

In this book Godin uses the word heretic a whole lot. When referring to a heretic he explains that it is someone who has an idea or a thought that’s above and beyond the status quo. A person whose idea can change an industry and even a generation. He gives examples of countless people, not necessarily ones in appointed leadership positions, that changes the face of a company or market. This book encourages you to be that leader and create a tribe around your idea.  Take a chance and say what you feel or believe because this people that believe with you, will follow you and become your tribe!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to lead or make a change in any area. I don’t want to give away too much about the book because you should really read it and take in all the information! If you own a small business, you have to read this book! Trust me you won’t regret it :)
